The videos for the Unit #10 lesson demonstrated how not to teach a class, how to teach a class, and how the differences between the two affect student performance. At first, I thought the preliminary video was going to be a good example, but the negative responses the teacher gave quickly showed me that the teacher's methods were not productive. He had a negative affect, he reprimanded students for being late, and he got frustrated when students couldn't complete an activity to his satisfaction. Those examples are clearly the wrong ways to handle a class. Initially, I thought the way he presented things on the board was somewhat appropriate, but after I saw the second video, I realized that he didn't explain the activity well enough to prepare the students. In the second video, the teacher showed an extremely positive affect; he smiled, he gave positive affirmation, and he included each student by calling on them by name. The main thing that I learned was demonstrated in the second video, which illustrated how a small amount of positive reinforcement can go a long way. It was clear that students were more likely to engage in the activity and willing to give responses in the second video than in the first video because the teacher engaged them in a positive manner that elicited more responses. The teacher also gave clear instructions in the second video, which made class time more productive and fostered a positive learning environment. The other points that I will take away from this lesson are: ensure students have the adequate skills and tools to complete a lesson, give positive support whenever possible, and provide ample instruction for activities to make sure students understand.
