Unit #5 provided a detailed introduction of class management, and the various hurdles teachers face as administrators. Many of the things covered in this unit were merely a reiteration of many topics I'm already well aware of but were nonetheless helpful in providing tools to manage a class. Some of these topics include the use of gestures, tone of voice, and building rapport with students. In my mind, these aspects are fundamental to communicating in general and are not limited to the classroom setting. However, the section on the teacher's position was quite informative because it explained the psychological impact that a teachers position has on the students in a classroom. As a hopeful teacher, I will likely pay close attention to the subtle influence of my place in the classroom and how it affects the students' performance and rapport. Otherwise, I found topics such as writing on the board, teach talker time, and seating arrangments to be informative, but they didn't teach me anything that I hadn't already surmised from my many years of experience as a student. Conversely, I found the section on maintaining the discipline to be the most enlightening as the thought of having to discipline students has been a controversial point for me as I look into a future of teaching. Unit #5 showed me that there are many small factors that play into problem behaviors among students, but also provided information on how to manage these problem behaviors in a productive manner before (and after) they arise.
