Whether to plan or not a lesson is a debated topic. Experienced teachers will tend to jot down brief notes on a piece pf paper, whilst those starting their career will be better off with a more structured plan. There are various reasons why planning a lesson can and is useful. For starters, it is aid for the teacher in the sense that it'll help maintain a logical sequence during the lesson. Secondly, it is a working document that helps keep the teacher on track and can be used as a reference during the lesson. Flexibility is key in planning and executing though. It also constitutes a record of what has been taught in the class, what materials have been used, etc. This provides an easy way to see how much of the syllabus has been covered and also very useful in case of needing to cover or be covered by another teacher.
