This unit explained the usages and meanings being the four different past tense forms. To decide which one to use depends on the exact meaning wished to be expressed.
Past simple tense uses the base form of the verb+ed, or it's irregular simple past form to express an action that clearly happened in the past. Past continuous tense uses was/were + verb+ing to express an action that began before a time and probably continued after it. Past perfect tense uses had + past participle to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Finally, past perfect continuous tense uses has been + verb+ing to express situations that had been going on continuously up to the past moment you're talking about.
