First in this unit I learned about the many methodologies that there are and how choosing one to focus on can be very difficult. All the different methodologies have their own pros and cons, but the upside to that is I can use any method that suits the certain circumstance. The most effective method seems to be the "ESA" method developed by Jeremy Harmer. This method seems to incorporate all aspects of a good, well rounded lesson. The acronym stands for Engage, Study, and Activate. The engage stage focuses on just that, engaging a student's interest, tempting them with new and exciting information. The goal of this stage should be to get students involved. It is recommended to include information and activities that will be relevant later on in the lesson. You should try to include photos, videos, games, and stories into this stage to get your students actively thinking. The next stage is the study stage. What you want to focus on here is the information itself. You could include drilling, elicitation, presentation, repetitive activities, exercises in the form of worksheets, anything to get your students using and memorizing the information that is being given. The last stage is the activate stage, in which you need to get your students using the information they now know and apply it in real conversation. They should be continually encouraged to speak and use all language they know and apply the new information they studied previously. You could do this by using a role-play exercise, or for more advanced students, a debate with fellow classmates. The last thing that I learned was how and when to correct. The table included showed possible codes you can use to mark errors or mistakes. During the Engage stage, few to no corrections should be made, this should be a stage where students should feel free to speak very comfortably. The study phase should have your corrections during, this is a phase of learning new information so if something is wrong, it should be corrected immediately so that something is not memorized in the wrong way. And finally, the activate stage. This stage should have a time where the students are left to plan what the want to say and be able to say it, then after that you should provide feedback and a chance for them to correct what was wrongly spoken or written.
