This unit provided an overview of different learning theories, methodologies, and teaching techniques to approach lesson planning. These approaches all have their strengths and weaknesses, and deciding which one to use depends on the teacher's personality, the culture of the students and their varying needs. However, they are certain guidelines about what outcomes are desirable, e.g. Students should be encouraged to discover language for themselves. In this way, methods and techniques can be picked on the basis of how effective they are in achieving such outcomes.
Lessons may follow some combination of Engage, Study, and Activate elements to achieve flexibility in designing lessons to suit different levels of students. All elements must be present in a lesson to provide a balanced range of activities for students. Some common variations are 'Straight Arrow', 'Boomerange', and 'Patchwork' sequencing.
Distinctions should be made about an error and a mistake; and teachers should try to let the student fix the mistake himself or have other students point it out to him before correcting it themselves.
All in all, this unit gave different techniques and a proven structure (ESA) to follow in approaching how to plan a lesson.
