This unit discussed how to teach productive skills – speaking and writing – to students, as well as how important integrating games into your lesson plan is in order to keep students engaged. Until studying this unit I had never thought too much about the difference between fluency and accuracy activities in terms of speaking exercises, but it makes a lot of sense. I enjoyed learning about how teachers should balance their lesson plans to include some time based solely for fluency, while other times should be devoted to accuracy. It was also interesting to learn about how receptive and productive skills can work together to enhance each other. In other words, reading texts can help with spelling, which inevitably helps with writing. The cartoon activity sounded very fun to me, and also made me think about how writing memes could be a good up-to-date activity for my students. Another interesting aspect of this unit was how it returned to the constant theme of having students do activities that are interesting/engaging to them. Students will be much more likely to let themselves be vulnerable and speak if they are interested in the topic they are speaking about! Finally, the game section had me thinking of two other games – banana grams and Mad Libs – which would be awesome to play in the classroom.
