This unit discussed the roles of students and teachers in the classroom, and how these roles must overlap and interact in order to form a successful classroom. Teachers must instill motivation in their students, and students must be willing to be make mistakes in order for everyone to thrive. This unit went in-depth into the number of different positions a teacher must take on within the classroom ranging from manager to organizer to prompter to tutor, and many more. An important part of a teacher’s job is knowing when to take on the different roles, and how to balance them so that students stay engaged throughout the entirety of a lesson. As important as it is for teachers to engage students and generate motivation within students, students must also come to class with an inherent drive to learn and to be comfortable with making mistakes. These aspects of learning are easier and harder for different aged learners, so teacher’s teaching styles must adapt to whatever age group they are working with. In addition, students must be active learners – willing to take risks, engage with the language, and ask lots of questions. Finally, the unit explained how there are varying levels of language acquisition. It is integral that teachers are aware of the level of their students so that they can design lesson plans that suit the abilities of their students.
