Lesson 6 focuses on past tenses. There are four main categories to keep in mind when dealing with past tenses. Past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous.
Similarly, to lesson 4 past tenses will need practice to master. From this lesson I learned how to better identify what type of tense a sentence might be based on what information is omitted from the statement.
For past simple tense if the question or statement has a definitive time that could be applied it should be past simple.
What time did you get home? – Has a definite answer that is not dependent on any other actions other than arriving at home.
Past continuous - They were playing. - This sentence does not answer if the action is still ongoing so would imply that the action could be ongoing.
Past perfect – I had just stepped outside when it started to rain. - Because this sentence has ‘had’ in it followed by another past action this suggests two past actions have taken place.
Past perfect continuous- I had been swimming all day long. - This sentence has the subject along with ‘had’ in conjunction with the ‘ing’ form of a verb.
This lesson was a good introduction to understanding tense forms and their applications. With more practice past tenses can become second nature to identify.
