This unit discussed how to teach students new vocabulary, new grammar rules/constructions, and new language functions. Each of the three sections talked about how to decide what vocabulary, grammatical constructions, and/or language functions to teach in a given lesson, and then how to actually go about doing so. I liked how each section discussed what every student should get out of the new thing learned. For example, students learning new vocab need to know the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation of each word. This was a helpful unit because it provides somewhat of a checklist to go through while planning a lesson to make sure that I hit on each of these things while trying to teach my students a new word, a new grammatical construct, or a new language function. Finally, I really appreciated how every section of this unit gave examples of how to structure an ESA style class to teach students one of the three things discussed here. Even though new vocab was discussed via the straight arrow approach, new grammar constructs via the patchwork approach, and new language functions via the boomerang approach, it is easy to see how these could be adapted for each other so that the boomerang, straight arrow, and patchwork could work for all three subunits of this unit.
