Classroom management is an important aspect of teaching. A large part of managing a classroom are the qualities that a teacher expresses in the classroom that add to the atmosphere (rapport) of the class. With an unselfish nature and a loving heart, a teacher can put the needs of the students first. This creates a better rapport in the classroom. The video on classroom management said that the biggest reason for discipline problems in a classroom was a disrespect for the teacher. To create a helpful learning atmosphere, a teacher should respect and believe in her/his students in order to decrease the amount of discipline issues. One specific idea to help classroom atmosphere is to keep the students reminded of why they are in the class. Keep the students thinking about the bigger picture. This could mean handing out a form at the beginning of the class asking why the students want to be in the class. Knowing the students motivations can help a teacher motivate the students to learn and help correct behavior. This lesson has several good ideas on classroom management. One idea is to never talk while writing on the board. This means that there will be dead time with no talking, but that is okay and can be avoided by writing on the board before class. Another helpful idea to practice is speaking at the language level of the students. The idea is to help them- not to impress them with your vocabulary. One way to help get the ideas across is to do a demonstration or give several examples. Another idea to help get instructions or ideas across to the students is to use the same instruction words like "stand up" and "sit down", "your homework will be" and "thank you for your hard work." An original idea that I had to help students understand directions and instructions would be to organize the board so that the sections that you use consistently have the same kinds of ideas on them. For example, the right side of the board always has the homework for the next day on it, or the top right hand corner always has the date. When the students know what to expect to read on the board by knowing where the information will be, it will be easier for them to understand the instructions that a teacher gives them. From this lesson, I learned that when checking to make sure that the students understand the instructions, one should never ask the question "do you understand." Instead a teacher should ask a specific student to answer what they are going to do in the activity. One thing that I look am looking forward to improving is simplifying things. Sometimes I make things too complex, but that makes it hard for students of English to understand. When teaching, I need to make the ideas I share as simple as possible so I do not overwhelm students with too much information.
