Pronunciation is one of the most neglected areas of teaching English as a foreign language. There tends to be less focus on it because many native English speakers do not understand all of the rules to pronunciation and general phonics. As this trend appears true, many teachers do not place much weight on teaching this concept to a beginner. However, a study showed that many English language learners desired to learn more about pronunciation. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sound. Stress, rhythm, and intonation are areas of phonology. Intonation is generally the volume and pitch of words, whereas stress is the emphasis placed on a certain word. Stress cannot be put on single letters, but must be placed on syllables.
