This unit examines a range of other grammar points that are commonly taught in an English language classroom. It covers the rules and usages of modals and some ideas for presenting them in the classroom. It takes a look at the comparison between active and passive voice and their usages. It also presents a brief overview of relative clauses and phrasal verbs.
This unit provided a good revision of my previous knowledge regarding the various topics mentioned. Adding to my knowledge, I have learned that there are true modal auxiliary verbs and semi-modal auxiliary verbs. Modal verbs are usually used to express a number of different ideas such as: ability, advice, offer, request, deduction, prediction, obligation, prohibition, promise, permission and possibility. Some modal verbs can be used interchangeably. For example, the modal verb ‘can’ may be used to express ability, permission, possibility, request or advice.
In the case of passive and active voice, it is a new insight for me that only transitive verbs are used in the passive and that perfect continuous are not normally used. In the passive voice, the tense is indicated by the auxiliary verb ‘be’, and in the active voice, the tense is shown by the main verb.
I’m glad to know some useful teaching ideas presented in this unit to aid in teaching modals, active and passive voice and phrasal verbs, especially that these topics are usually a cause of confusion to most students. The teaching ideas can be easily incorporated in the activate stage of the lesson and can be practically used to practice a student’s better understanding of the topics in the classroom.
