This unit discusses lesson planning, its main components, the importance of creating a lesson plan, and ways of producing an effective lesson plan. It also presents a sample format that clearly explains how to deliver a lesson using the ESA approach.
In this unit, I learned the importance of lesson planning to the teaching and learning process. It provides a logical sequence for lessons, serves as a working document, acts as a record of past lessons and serves as a guide for substitutes who might cover the class. The usual components of a lesson plan include general information and what should happen in a class meeting. When planning a sequence of lessons, some considerations that we need to put in mind are flexibility, goals or aims, revision, and variety and balance.
In our school, we are not required to produce and submit lesson plans. However, I find it more convenient to create lesson plans since it provides more control and direction to my classes.
Preparing for lessons helps me devise appropriate learning activities and effective teaching strategies that aid the students to learn more successfully. It gives me time to predict what might happen in the class, what problems or issues might arise, and what I can do to resolve these issues. I usually feel more confident in teaching when I organize lessons beforehand. I encountered issues before that would have been avoided if I had thought more carefully about the lesson. One time, a student asked me to expound on a topic but I was speechless because I did not revise the subject matter well. Since then, I always make sure to have a well thought-out lesson plan.
Good lesson planning makes a productive teaching and learning environment. Although unexpected things can happen in the class, it still helps to be well-prepared.
