Teachers are not only a source of knowledge but they are also role models to their students. How the teacher carries herself in character, conduct and speech, reflects to the student the personality of the teacher. A dedicated and compassionate teacher, knows the needs of her students and she is able to use empathy to help her along. I feel that the relationship between a teacher and her students, is not limited to a robotic kind whereby the teacher feeds the information and the student takes it in, but rather, it is more on a personal human level where, emotions and character are of importance.
With regards to the younger students, I feel that teachers serve as a "secondary" parent to them when they are in school. In South East Asia (I am from Malaysia), we spend around 6- 7 hours in school and a majority of us has a continuation of extra tuition classes after school hours. During these times, teachers are responsible to tutor and also seen as a "parent' to us; to correct us when we make mistakes be it in forms of lessons or life lessons.
There is a Malaysian saying about teachers, -> Students are like blank canvases that the teacher fills with colour and images; turning them into beautiful pieces of artwork.
