This unit deals with the sounds we use to make up words and sentences. It tells how we use intonation and different stress to create meaning and has an extensive section on phonics. It explains how phonemes are created and the parts of the mouth that are used to make them. I learnt that there are sounds that are voiced and sounds that are unvoiced and we use a lot of very strange noises to make up our words. Spelling is not directly related to the sounds we produce and the same sound can be represented by many different letters in the Roman alphabet.
