Lesson 3 demonstrates how to use ESA (Engage Study Activate) teaching methods in the classroom. Keeping in mind the three different variations to apply this method by using the straight arrow, boomerang and patch work formats will help keep the lessons varied and engaging.
This lesson also provided a wide variety of teaching methodologies that I had not been exposed to yet. In my experience in learning Japanese and Spanish the most common approach I remember being used was the Lexicon approach. While I feel I benefited greatly from this style I am interested in further developing my understanding of other methods as well.
Techniques in proper correction was another aspect of teaching which I had not considered before reading about it in this lesson. Applying proper corrective styles which both encourage student learning while avoiding direct criticism which would reduce the students’ self-esteem is critical to student success. I also learned the difference between an error and a mistake which I had not realized were fundamentally different. Staying culturally respectful for how to appropriately address an error or mistake at the appropriate time was very beneficial information.
