I learned that the understanding of readers and listeners will depend on a number of specialist skills. The first is their ability to predict the content of a text from the headline or introduction. We often read and listen for specific information, scanning through a huge amount for that which we seek. It is possible to construct a general idea of a text or to understand everything in detail. Sometimes we also need to be able to understand or deduce the meaning of individual words or phrases. Understanding a text can be dependent on a number of problems. Language difficulty is the first problem. Sentence length, word length, and the number of unfamiliar words can hinder students’ understanding. Listening presents even greater problems as students’ don’t get to see the language in front of them. Ways of approaching this difficulty is: pre-teaching vocabulary, and carefully selecting texts. The topic or dialogue of a text can also help to motivate students. If topics are not interesting it could leave the students unwilling to truly engage with it. The teacher can also use engage phase activities to get student interested in the text. Comprehension tasks is a good way to promote understanding. Activities such as jigsaws and jumbled texts are some examples of motivating tasks.
