This unit provided interesting insight as to how a TEFL class differs from a regular (ie native English speaking) classroom. Almost all of my experience has been with the latter, and while it was interesting to see what general principles could be shared between the two classrooms, my interest was ultimately most piqued when I learnt about what TEFL-specific classroom management details. More and more I am realizing and learning that I cannot simply rely on my own classroom experience; I originally thought that that would have been enough to get me by, but now I realize that there is more that goes into building a strong TEFL class than just those shared general principles.
It was also very interesting to read into the details of classroom arrangement and student grouping. Those sections in particular made me realize more and more that such arrangements and groupings are not simply coincidental -- the teacher has put a lot of thought into what will work best for their class! The TTT discussion was also interesting because I had always thought that when my teachers were sitting at their desks during certain activities, it was because they were lazy, or behind on marking. Now, I realize, as with the arrangement and grouping topics, that it was a deliberate move on the teacher's part to benefit the students, and that it is far from lazy.
