Marcola, Oregon TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit discussed modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, phrasal verbs, and relative clauses. This unit was one of the first where I felt like I didn’t already know the majority of material included, so it was very helpful to go over and begin to learn/truly understand. From the modals section I learned that many of the words that we use in speech to define what tense we are in are modals. The passive voice section was very helpful to go over due to the fact that I have always been told to never write or speak in the passive voice and thus am not aware of the intricacies of it. From the clauses section, the main takeaway I had was how important using commas is in order to distinguish between a defining relative clause and a non-defining relative clause. Finally, from the phrasal verbs section, I learned how to distinguish the difference between transitive separable and transitive inseparable phrasal verbs. I can already tell this will be a hard thing to teach my students, but the main thing to focus on is that with transitive inseparable phrasal verbs, it is an object phrase or object pronoun that both come after the particle, whereas with the transitive separable phrasal verbs, the option for an object to come after the particle is only for an object noun.
