The focus of this unit is teaching special groups and the various style and approach that can be employed when teaching particular learners. It also presents Business English or English for Specific Purposes in detail – the types of clients, gathering needs analysis, planning a suitable program, and things to consider when teaching this type of learners.
I have experience in teaching most of the special groups indicated in this unit including beginners, children, individual students, and monolingual classes; although, the extent of my experience in teaching the groups vary. I mostly taught children with ages ranging from two to six and adults in monolingual classes with ages ranging from 14 to 21.
I agree that beginners require special skills in teaching and that continuous exposure to the language and constant revision of lessons are needed. For children, they need fun, varied activities in which movement, music and catchy visual aids are incorporated not only to hold their attention span but also to stimulate their brains and keep their curiosity. Even if they are only young, the children still need rules and regulations in the classroom in order to establish class discipline and avoid disruptive behaviors, so I make sure to set routines and rules as early as the first day of class. Once the children are set in this area, I can focus more on their learning and development. I must say that teaching young learners is indeed a rewarding experience.
In teaching individual students, it is crucial to conduct a needs analysis so that the lessons will be specifically catered towards their own needs and language problems and will be at their level of proficiency. Although there are limitations in the activities that can be given when teaching individual students, teachers can use activities that maximizes the students’ interest and experience.
I have no experience in teaching Business English / ESP, so the topic on teaching this special group has given me a lot of insight regarding the type of learners, their specific needs and appropriate teaching approaches for this group. As the clients here are professionals in their field, teachers must also present themselves professionally.
