In this unit, I’ve learnt more about the English grammar, regarding the modal auxiliary verbs, passive and aggressive voice, as well as phrasal verbs. The phrasal verbs were especially difficult for me to grasp, and I am still not completely sure if I understood it fully. This also got me to think about exactly how much grammar I will teach as a teacher. I’ve always thought that I would teach students the English grammar ‘naturally’ without dissecting sentences into nouns, verbs and particles etc. Yet, after doing the previous units, I’ve also come to realise that some (older) students who wish to take external examinations such as TOEIC or IELTS would require that level of grammar knowledge to pass. Thus this unit has made me seriously reconsider getting a grammar reference book to be able to design suitable lessons around grammar; such as the phrasal verb.
