Mosier, Oregon TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I learned that most students struggle with the multitude of tenses in English. There are three tenses with four sub-categories each: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. In the present simple form, I also learned that most students struggle with changing the verb form to match with the subject and struggle with the usage of the auxiliary verb “do” and adding the verb in its base form. In the present continuous form the present simple tense of the auxiliary verb “to be” is used together with the present participle of the main verb i.e. [to be] + verb+ing. Some non-actions are not generally used in the continuous form. These include verbs of the senses; verbs expressing feelings and emotions; verbs of mental activity and verbs of possession. In the present perfect, one uses the auxiliary verb “have” + the past participle. It is imperative to point out the irregular past participles to students and stress the difference between been (the trip is finished) and gone (the trip is ongoing). I have learned that the past perfect continuous tense relates past activities to the future. It is used to express an activity that is incomplete or is ongoing and to describe a recently finished activity with present results.
