Tutorials, evaluation and testing are important methods for monitoring student progress and measuring teacher effectiveness. Tutorials can be group based or individualised. A guided discussion can provide a useful evaluation of both teaching and learning. The information that is provided can be used to fuel and guide future lessons making them more relevant and effective. There are a number of different tests for different purposes. Most aim to measure proficiency or accuracy of language and can be completed as regular short tests or a longer more detailed examinations. Testing can be set by the teacher or can be outsourced to other outside testing institutions such as Cambridge. Progress testing should be completed regularly to gauge language that has been acquired or remembered and areas for further development. Achievement testing also provides feedback for students about their own progress and efforts with language learning. Progress testing should cover all four areas of language – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Diagnostic testing allow teachers to identify specific areas to target. Testing or exam technique itself may require practice and instruction – how to complete an exam. External testing such as IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge and TOEFL will provide a formal qualification. There are also other exams that test English proficiency such as business and life- skills English.
