I learned that different groups require not only a different difficulty level or vocabulary, but also a different approach from the teacher. When teaching a beginner group it is important to note that there are varying categories of beginners. These include: the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner, and the beginner without exposure to the Roman alphabet. The key with beginners is to keep things simple and not to rush through course work. One should be sensitive to their needs and encourage and praise them a lot. In recent years, teaching individual learners have gained increased popularity in the business world. Some advantages of teaching one-to-one is that there is no mixed levels, the student is usually highly motivated, their needs can be clearly defined, and it allows the teacher and student to create a close relationship. When you are teaching children it can be very rewarding, since they have an innate curiosity. There are some things to take note of when teaching children. You should always speak slower and more clearly. Use a higher pitch and exaggerated intonation. Use lots of repetition, reference to the child itself, and respond positively. Keep the activities varied, fun, and at a good pace. Teaching English to business people has enjoyed a growing interest world-wide. This involves an increasing amount of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), i.e. teaching people setting specific language. Teaching can take place one-to-one, in an in-company group, or an in-school group. Business people are usually tired, have limited time, and may have difficulty with attending class regularly. It is good to assess their level of English as well as completing a “needs analysis” with the clients. After the pre-course assessment of needs and ability from the questionnaire responses and talking with the group, begin listing suitable learning objectives, situations, language, and published material. You can also end up teaching a monolingual or multilingual class. In a multilingual class the students are from various different nationalities. An advantage of multilingual classes might be that the students only have English as a common language and so all communication has to take place in English. It also brings a greater variety of culture and ideas into the classroom. In a monolingual class students may share similar language obstacles and it might be easier for the teacher to identify certain topics that the students could find interesting or relevant.
