This unit is all about coursebooks and lesson materials. It discusses a wide range of issues related to the materials and teaching aids that the teacher can use to deliver an effective lesson in an English language classroom.
In my teaching experience, the course that I have taught has a coursebook along with it. I planned my lessons around it and made sure I worked my way through it. It is helpful for me because it is one of the main sources of English learning teaching materials. It has a syllabus and it shows how lessons should be conducted. But sometimes the coursebook doesn’t cater to all my students. It does not take into consideration the specific needs and interests of the students. So sometimes I have to redesign the pages and personalize them to make the lesson effective. This unit walked me through different options for coursebook use, i.e. omit, replace, supplement and adapt. We may not be able to choose our coursebook, but we can still make choices about what materials in it to use and how to use it.
In addition to the coursebook, there are other materials we can use to add variety to our teaching. They may come from authentic sources (e.g. newspaper, video, brochures, etc.) and created materials (e.g flashcards, crosswords, picture stories, etc.). It may be useful to use authentic materials to give the students the experience of working with more challenging tasks but they may not be designed for a particular level. Therefore, we sometimes create our own materials to suit the interests, level and need of the students.
