The important subject of lesson planning is the focus of this unit. It tackles why planning is important and why teachers plan their lessons.
A lesson plan is a set of notes basically to help teachers think through what they are going to teach and how they are going to teach it. It also guides them during and after the lesson.
We can identify the most important components of a lesson plan by thinking carefully about our learners, what we want our learners to do and how we want them to do it. It’s also important to think about things that might go wrong during the lesson, so a lesson plan should include anticipated problems and possible solutions. We need to build in variety, i.e. how we can use activity types, teaching aids and interaction patterns. The ESA method is a good way to develop the stages of a lesson plan logically. Variety is also one to be considered in lesson planning as it helps keep learners interested and involved.
A good lesson plan is simple and structured, build in flexibility and openness to adaptation, and there is a good mix of skills throughout the lesson.
