Oxbow, Oregon TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit takes a look at equipment and teaching aids for use in the English language classroom. It identifies some of the resources often found in classrooms, and further elaborates what their uses are and how teachers can use them effectively in their teaching. This unit also lists down useful online resources for both students’ and teachers’ use.
In my teaching experience, I have used most of the mentioned teaching resources in this unit already to aid with my lessons. The board is useful especially for writing down important words, drawing or illustrating diagrams, displaying pictures and for students to write down answers/ideas. The other equipment (computer, interactive whiteboard, OHP and CD/DVD player) are used for grammar drills, for displaying prepared exercises and for listening practice with added visual information. Other aids that I bring into the classroom are: realia, flashcards, prompt cards and charts not only to add variety and interest, but also to present a language and to stimulate discussion.
In this unit, I have learned useful tips in using aids in the classroom. When using the computer or other equipment, it is best to check them before the lesson and to have a backup system in case of system failure. When using charts, flashcards, and transparencies for the overhead projector, advance preparation is also essential. It’s a good thing we can save such aids and re-use them in future lessons.
Different aids have different advantages and disadvantages. We select and use aids by thinking carefully about the aims of our lesson and choose the best one for our specific teaching purpose and context.
