This unit is all about teaching pronunciation and phonology. As mentioned in this unit, pronunciation is an aspect of the English language teaching that is important to most students but often neglected by many teachers because of the difficulty of teaching this skill and the lack of confidence on the part of the teacher to teach it. Through the article and the videos in this unit, I’ve come to a realization that teaching pronunciation doesn’t have to be so complicated.
My knowledge is heightened with the different components of the study of phonology with its relevance to the teaching of pronunciation. Pronunciation is not limited to the way in which sounds are articulated but goes further to incorporate other articulatory aspects, namely stress and intonation patterns. Some of the ways to help teachers teach stress patterns of single words and intonation of sentences are by using nonsense words, by using gesture, by humming, chanting or singing, and using the board to illustrate and indicate intonation and stress.
Included in this unit is the topic about the International Phonetic Alphabet and the ways it can be used to help teachers and students. Some ways to implement sounds and pronunciation in the classroom is by using tongue-twisters and showing the students how to form the sounds in their mouth. By contextualizing the activities and eliminating theoretical jargons, teaching the sounds of the English language can be fun, easy and effective.
