Lesson 5 covers various classroom setups and speech styles that a teacher can use in the classroom to maintain student interest and facilitate good behavior.
Classroom structure provided useful information since 95 percent of my classroom experience was the classic orderly rows set up. Rarely did I consider other methods before reading this lesson but the benefits from changing the seating structure make sense depending on what type of activity the student will be engaging in. The horseshoe set up interested me the most because I like the idea of providing all students an equal amount of teacher exposure since there is no ‘back’ of the class with this set up. I believe this method will also help in facilitating a higher level of interpersonal rapport with the students and should be used at least a few times.
Another technique I enjoyed learning about was when posing questions to the students to wait to say their name until the end. Students are good at picking up on patterns and this is an effective way to keep the attention of the class when presenting questions.
During this lesson I gained valuable insight on the Do’s and Don’ts of classroom structure and interaction. Disciplining is not an element I am looking forward to but will inevitably become necessary at some point in a teaching career. This lesson helped me develop an understanding of what to expect and how to go about these situations.
