This final unit is all about troubleshooting. It explores some of the most common problem situations that teachers can encounter in the classroom and also suggests ways of dealing with them. It discusses how to start a new course effectively, as well as how to deal with large classes, reluctant students and multi-level classes.
In my teaching career, I used to deal with the same situations as mentioned here like meeting students for the first time (both in an existing group and in a new group), teaching a class with mixed ability, teaching large groups, managing the class regarding the use of the students’ native language, and managing reluctant students. I really didn’t know the best approach to use then. This unit has shown me a lot of useful ideas to practice. For instance, when faced with a first lesson, it is best to use activities that will build rapport between the students and also between the teacher and the class. It is also a good idea to use warmers at the start of a lesson to get the students motivated and get them ready for the next stages of the lesson. Lastly, it helps to employ a number of methods and to adopt a mixed of the suggested techniques and activities here to create successful classes.
