I learned that course books will often be supplemented with material that the teacher has created or even whole sections might have to be replaced when they are not suitable to a class. Material can be divided into two groups: authentic material and created material. Authentic material is anything a native speaker would hear or read and was not created for the students. These include songs, poems, brochures, menus, films, and newspapers. Created materials are usually created by the teacher. These include crosswords, gap fill activities, word search puzzles, and flashcards. Course books have a number of materials: student book, workbook, audio files, teacher’s book, videos, and other published material. The advantages of course books are that it is expected, it provides a syllabus graded to the students’ level, it is less time consuming than creating a syllabus and material from scratch, it provides security, it normally has a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work. It is also tried and tested, offers continuity and progression, and the teacher’s book offers good ideas for the inexperienced teacher. Course book disadvantages are that it is impossible to cater to the needs of every student, students might not like it and be reluctant to use it, teachers don’t get to choose the course book and many can be outdated, it is always a compromise, it can make teacher’s lazy, exclusive use of the course book can become predictable and boring, and it dictates what needs to be taught. It is best if you have a choice of course book, don’t use the course book for the whole lesson, plan ahead and note which items are suitable and which will have to be supplemented, match the book to the needs of the students, and approach the book critically. There are four different options for course book use: omit, replace, supplement, and adapt. If it is possible to choose one’s own course book, there are a few things to consider. These are price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic, and teacher’s guide, what ancillary materials are there?
