Remote, Oregon TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit discussed general English pronunciation and explained how important it is for teachers to understand proper pronunciation because it is an incredibly important aspect of the English language to teach, yet is often neglected. I enjoyed gaining a greater insight into the differences between intonation and stress and more specifically how slight changes in intonation can cause drastic changes in the desired effect of a sentence. One thing that will be hard to teach, but is absolutely necessary to explain, is the idea that at its basis, intonation relies on emotions/feelings. Certain syllables within a word/sentence will always take the stress, but intonation relies most heavily on the feeling the speaker is trying to get across with whatever they are saying. One very interesting part of this unit was learning about language linking, dropping, changing, etc. These are aspects of native English speakers that I had totally taken for granted, but clearly are important to hash out and explain to my students. In addition, reading through the articulation section of the unit was intriguing because I have never thought about the shape of my mouth/tongue while I am speaking. Since I am teaching in Indonesia where the natives there speak a totally phonetic language, it will be fun/challenging to play tongue twister games, etc., to help them learn a very non-phonetic language.
