Classroom management is the focus of this unit. This unit covers how a teacher can use eye contact, gesture and his/her voice in the classroom. The eyes can be used to show students that they are involved in the lesson, to show when something is correct and to encourage or dissuade. Gestures are used to convey meaning and to add visual interest. The voice, on the other hand can be used to give instructions and to manage the class. The greater the variation of the voice, the greater the effectiveness.
There are different ways in which we can organize students in the classroom. They can work on their own, as a whole class, and in groups. The classroom arrangement is also to be considered here. Though factors such as class size and classroom furniture can be problematic, it is useful to include a variety of interaction patterns in a lesson to keep the students motivated and to give them different kinds of practice. Appropriate groupings and proper seating arrangement can have a positive effect on class dynamics and on the teacher’s ability to successfully manage the class and facilitate learning.
Aside from the above mentioned, there are other classroom issues to be considered. Some of those are writing on the board, giving individual attention, the use of teacher talk time, the way in which we give instructions to students, the building and maintaining rapport with our students and the issue of classroom discipline.
For teaching to be effective, it is important to consider different strategies and techniques for classroom management and discipline as it is one of the most powerful factors in affecting student outcomes.
