This unit discussed how to evaluate your students. The biggest takeaway I had from this unit was that every teacher goes about evaluating their students in their own way, but that often times there are mandatory exams students must take at the end of the year, so preparing them for this is incredibly important. Furthermore, regardless of how a teacher judges the progress of their students, they must have a system in place to do so. I firmly believe that students need to feel like they are/will be getting tested in order to help instill a drive to learn within them. Since this worked while I was a student, I plan on starting out with a system where there are recurrent smaller (weekly?) assessments that don’t stress students out too much, but will give me a window into the level that each of my students is at. Then, I plan to have at least two major tests throughout a given semester, because I feel that these cumulative tests are integral to learning. I agree that sometimes these can become just a memorization technique, but I think it is important for students to have to bring everything they have learned together. Finally, it gives students a sense of accomplishment to know they studied and took a cumulative test!
