Speaking and writing are the two productive skills. They are each different, but they are both critical in order to communicate properly. While writing is essential to solid communication, it can be one of the most neglected skills when teaching a foreign language. The reasoning for this negligence is often found within two areas of the classroom. Some teachers prefer to allocate time to other activities and many students wish to master their speaking skills. Writing is often a bit more challenging as well because misunderstandings cannot be cleared up immediately in a conversation as with speaking. Handwriting, spelling, format, and punctuation are incredibly vital to improving writing. Yet, speaking is also difficult because it requires more fluency. Types of speaking activities can thus be divided into two general groups: accuracy and fluency based exercises. In the former the language is controlled by the teacher and is employed to ensure accurate language. Fluency based activities allow for students to be more creative and less worried and bound by rules.
