This unit focuses on teaching pronunciation and phonology. Specifically, it covers intonation, stress, rhythm, the phonemic alphabet, the phonemic symbols, and articulation as well as helpful teaching techniques that can be used in lessons.
All the aforementioned elements are important to achieve successful communication. Students need to be familiarized with pronunciation, stress and intonation so that they will be aware of the importance of accuracy and clarity of communication. By learning these, students will be able to distinguish the function of the message that other people are trying to communicate and in turn, deliver back the message that they want to express. Intonation can be taught by using nonsense words, gestures, humming or singing, and making marks on the board. Stress, on the other hand, can be taught through contrastive stress, gestures, choral work, and stress marks.
Teaching pronunciation can be simpler by using the phonemic alphabet. Although it can be complicated and confusing at first, the use of phonemic charts is important to direct learner’s attention to particular sounds when they learn new language. Teachers are encouraged to introduce a few symbols at a time to help students remember better.
