Learning a language develops both receptive skills and productive skills. The previous unit tackles teaching the receptive skills. This unit examines the productive skills in more detail. Productive skills are speaking and writing. They involve producing language rather than receiving it. Fluency and accuracy play a major part in producing a language. In speaking, the accuracy of grammar, use of vocabulary and the production of sounds help keep our message clear. Fluency helps ensure that our listener will keep on listening to us without getting bored or irritated by too many hesitations or too slow a pace of speaking. Accuracy activities, which are part of the study phase, are usually controlled to ensure accurate reproduction of language, e.g. drills, repetition, prompting, guided role-play. Fluency activities, which are usually part of the activate phase, are concentrated on allowing the students to be creative with the language, hence concerned with the effectiveness and flow of communication, e.g. information-gap activities, discussions, free role-play, debates, problem-solving, communicative games. Teachers can motivate students to speak by giving them plenty of controlled and guided practice, changing the classroom dynamics and giving them time to plan, prepare and practice before they speak freely to give them confidence. In contrast to speaking, accuracy in writing relates to spelling correctly, writing legibly, punctuating correctly, using correct layouts, and organizing the information in a text to have cohesion. Some activities to help students practice accuracy in writing are labelling, sentence completion, gap-filling, jumbled picture stories and story completion. But as with speaking activities, teachers can motivate students to write by building interest, giving them reason to write, having them work in pairs or groups and giving them time to think and plan for their written work.
