There are four categories of past tense verbs. These include past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. All of these tenses describe past events, but they have different usages. The past simple tense is formed by adding an -ed to the end of a verb for regular verbs. For the negative, you add "did not" in front of the verb. For a question, you add "Did (subject)" before the verb. Past simple is used to describe events that happened at a specific time in the past. The past continuous tense is formed with the subject + past form of "to be" + verb(ing). The negative is formed with subject + past form of "to be" + not + verb (ing). The question is formed with were + subject + verb (ing). This tense is used when an action is in progress in the past. The past perfect tense is formed with the subject + had + past participle. The negative is formed with subject + had + not + past participle. The question is formed with had + subject + past participle. This tense is used when one action is completed before another action in the past. The past perfect continuous tense is formed with the subject + had + been + verb (ing). The negative is formed with subject + had + not + been + verb (ing). The question is formed with had + subject + been + verb (ing). This tense is used when one a past action began before another, and continued up until and potentially past the second action.
