I learned that the past tense structure and format follows the structure of the present tense more or less. The form for simple past is the base form of the word with an added –d or –ed (there are a lot of irregular past forms). It is used with didn’t to create a negative sentence and to form a question you use did and the base form of the verb. It is used for actions completed at a definite time in the past: for a past action when the time is given, when the time is asked about, when the action clearly took place at a definite time even though the time is not mentioned, or sometimes the time becomes definite when the question and answer is in the present perfect. The format of the past continuous is the past tense of the auxiliary verb “be” + the present participle (verb+ing). It is used for interrupted past actions, without a time expression, to express an action that began before a specified time and probably continued after it, or in descriptions. The past perfect format is had + the past participle. It is used to express actions that happened before other actions in the past. The past perfect continuous is used to talk about actions that had been going on continuously up to the past moment we are talking about.
