This unit discussed teaching vocabulary, grammar, and functions. I read that the difficulty of learning new vocabulary depends on the similarity to the students' language, the English words they already know, and appropriacy, among other factors. With low-level students whose L1 is very different from English, it is hard to build on their previous knowledge. Because of this, a teacher has to make sure that the students find the vocabulary not just appropriate, but relevant. Communicative language activities focusing on function could encourage students to learn new vocabulary and grammar.
