This unit has taught me the different types of roles that teachers and students can assume in the education environment. I believe it is important to recognize all the roles that are required of a teacher so that a prospective teacher can be aware of all the areas that students may require assistance. For example, teaching English as a second language is not all about standing up at the whiteboard and lecturing for the entirety of the class, which is the manager/controller role. Young learners would not benefit at all from that sort of teaching method. Adults may be able to withstand more lecturing, however, it is a poor long term strategy as the students are not using they new skills they are acquiring. A prospective teacher, as the unit mentions, should be able to slide into all of the roles and see which is most effective with their students. Additionally, it is important for a prospective teacher to be able to distinguish the types of learners and the methods that are most effective. This requires a knowledge of what makes a good learner and what the learner is motivated by, which was outlined in this unit as well. Essentially this unit is an imperative first step in recognizing and putting to use the teacher/student relationship.
