In this unit, I learned about conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals contain ‘if’ or ‘when’ and refer to past, present, or future possibilities. The ‘if’ condition needs to be satisfied before the action or state of the main clause can be realized. There are five main conditionals: zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional. I learned the form and usage for each conditional, as well as typical student errors and teaching ideas. I believe difficulty with the verb tense used in each conditional will be very challenging for some learners.
Similarly, there will be the same difficulty with verb tense in reported speech. Also, since the time between the conversation and the reported speech can change the tense on the reported speech, students will have a tough time. The reading does warn to tread slowly. This language point will be very problematic for students, and a review in tenses would be advantageous for the students. When I attempted some of the tasks, I have a troublesome time because of the changes in verb tense. I felt that there was more than one verb tense that could be used, but each option would depend on the time between the conversation and the reported speech.
