In this lecture we studied both conditional phrasing as well as reported speech. Conditional are sentences that contain the word 'if' (or a similar expression such as 'when') and are meant to refer to past, present and future possibilities. As such conditional phrases can be used in five different states: zero, first, second, third and mixed each corresponding with a specific time condition. Reported speech is used to turn direct questions and phrases into indirect phrases. This can be accomplished through changing the verb into a positive form. There are many rules and exceptions for reported speech and the best way to teach this form is through having students examine it carefully and slowly taking their time to ensure that they understand it.
