During this unit we understood the importance of planning the lesson we are going to teach. Though this is not mandatory and flexibility during the class is also important, planning might have some advantages for the teacher. It helps as a reference during the lesson and it can be a record of what has been done in each class. The way on which each teacher will plan their classes is very personal. There is no right way. Nonetheless, this unit includes a plan suggestions that I found quite useful, in which we should include the learner objective, the language point, the activities for each lesson stage and its duration, etc. We can plan individual classes or a sequence of lessons, in which we need to keep in mind the flexibility, the goal and the variety of the lessons. This will often imply reviewing the plan according to the real progress in class. Monitoring and feedback is also an important aspect during the lesson, to understand the progress of the students and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson itself.
Personally, in the brief experiences I’ve had as a teacher, I would plan my classes, but not in such a detailed way as suggested here, since I knew that in the circumstances I was teaching, flexibility was vital. But I still think that the form suggested here allows a good balance between planning and flexibility and works well as a record of what is being done. I also found the monitoring form of much use.
