This section covered how to select and present new items in an ESL class. Teachers should select new vocabulary to introduce to students on the basis of the learning level, the similarity of the new word to the native tongue and other known English words, the frequency that the word is used, and the importance of its function in language. When introducing either new vocabulary or new grammatical forms or functions, teachers should consider the merits of a straight arrow lesson plan versus boomerang or patchwork set-ups. In any case, students should learn the pronunciation, form, and function of the new concepts with opportunities to learn in a formal setting and to actively practice the new knowledge.
