In this unit we learn about the two receptive learning skills of reading and listening. Both are equally important. People read and listen for two reasons. The first reason is for a purpose - to garner some important information. The second reason is for entertainment. Reading and listening often rely on our pre-existing knowledge of the world. We take a lot from the context of what we are reading, it does not just rely on seeing and hearing! Scanning, skimming and deduction are just a few common types of reading that we do. A great lesson around receptive learning is Engage: showing a quick excerpt of a popular song and then elicit thoughts and impressions. Then Study: hand out a worksheet with gap-fills of the lyrics. Play the song and have them fill in the missing words. Then Activate: Ask them to think of another popular song and write down the lyrics without naming who sings it. Pair them up and get them to guess who their partner's singer was, then have them each explain the singer and their lyrics.
