In this unit, I learned about how to select and teach vocabulary, grammar, and language functions and about the lesson plans that are typically use to teach each new language aspect. I find the example lesson plans for vocabulary, grammar, and language function to be extremely helpful since I have a difficult time planning lessons. One example of this is when I learned that selecting vocabulary can be rather tricky. I always thought selecting vocabulary for the lesson would be obvious and straightforward, however, I realized when I was tutoring a beginner level student that that was not the case. There are countless words to choose from so you have to narrow them down to the ones that are central to what your trying to teach and that are relatable so that they can be used in sentences. For example, I was teaching my student commonly used verbs, but I did not consider the nouns that she would need to use with the verbs. I did not consider the balance of the vocabulary choices needed for the lesson, so when I prompted her to use certain verbs in sentences she forced to depend on her own knowledge of English vocabulary to complete her sentences and also repeated the same words with different verbs. She was successful in learning the verbs but I also learned that I need to choose vocabulary that is not only central to the lesson but appropriate to form a complete lesson.
