Langston, Pennsylvania TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has brought to my attention how slight the differences in usages and meanings each tense can have within and from one another. It was extremely difficult differentiating the usages between two tenses in task seven. To complete the task, I would try to come up with an example first and explain what the difference in meaning each example had based on the tense used. However, when I thought about the examples in conversation, I realized that sometimes more than one tense can be used to convey the same message. For example, if someone asked you about your day yesterday, it could go something like this:
A: What did you do yesterday?
B: I ran errands all day.
Or you could respond like this:
A: What did you do yesterday?
B: I was running errands.
Either tense, past simple or past continuous, both answers the question and convey basically the same message. This may not be a problem that multiple tenses can be used in the same situation to others, but for someone like me, who sometimes just needs it to be black and white, it can be frustrating.
Although the unit does offer the different usages for each tense and I can use them correctly, it was a challenging task when told to compare and contrast different tenses. If I had a hard time differentiating tense, I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for learners. I now think that it is important to pay attention to the subtle differences in usage and meaning that each tense offers because it may be the thing that offers your students understanding.
