In Unit eleven I learned that are four basic skills in any language; receptive skills which consist of reading and listening and productive skills which are speaking and reading. The two types of receptive motives are: purpose and entertainment. An example of the purpose motive would be following directions for how to build a desk from Ikea, while an entertainment motive would be reading Shel Silversteins poem Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout would not take the garbage out. Which is fun and may even have a lesson disguised in the content. Another interesting aspect of this lesson was reading the headline Cowboys Destroy Bears which, being from the United States, I can use my pre-existent knowledge to understand that those are football teams or even historical context where the cowboys did indeed destroy most of the bears. The lesson was topped off by showing an example of a patchwork assignment that could be used to get students engaged, because one of the tasks as a teacher is to find topics of interest so that young students don't spend their time day dreaming out the window or flicking their teeth with fingernails.
